Portal Trail Portal Trail

Just north of Moab turn left on highway279 and head down the Colorado River to where it cuts through the cliff walls known as the Portal. Trailhead parking is on the right. Climb slickrock ledges to a breathtaking overlook of Moab, the Colorado River and south up the Spanish Valley.

Corona Arch Corona Arch

Follow the same directions as if heading for the Portal Overlook trail but continue on the river road of Hwy 279 for about another 6 miles to a parking lot on your right side. Just downstream of this is the Gold Bar riverside camping area. This trail is a wonderful walk over sand and slick rock to one of the most beautiful arches in the region. Corona Arch is more accessible than its famous look alike 'Rainbow Bridge', near Navajo Mountain.

Behind the Rocks Behind the Rocks

Accessed best from Pritchett Canyon, take the Kane Creek Road off 191 at the McDonalds restaurant in Moab. Follow this to the Colorado where the road swings south along the river. Continue for another 2-3 miles to the trailhead parking on the left. Walk up Pritchett Canyon a mile and watch for a side canyon coming in on the left that will have you disappear into this fantastical frenzy of fins for fabulous photographic feasts.

Hunter Canyon Hunter Canyon

Follow directions as if going to Pritchett Canyon. Continue on this gravel road as it switch backs down to creek level. Drive 2 miles up the Kane Creek Canyon to the Hunter Canyon Trailhead parking. A spectacular walk up a desert wash that will take you deep into a world of slick rock potholes and pour-offs.

Negro Bill Canyon Negro Bill Canyon

Just north of Moab turn right before crossing the Colorado River on Hwy 128 and head up river about 2 miles to a roadside trailhead with parking on the right. This magical creek side walk is bounded by sandstone walls that reach for the sky. Treat yourself to the splendour of Morning Glory Arch a few hours walk from the parking lot.

Fisher Towers Fisher Towers

Follow directions to Negro Bill Canyon and keep going on Hwy 128 another 15 miles or so. Turn right and drive the gravel access road about 2 miles to the trailhead parking lot. The route will wind its way through a castle like fortress of red rock pinnacles leaving you feeling small, insignificant but totally rejuvenated.

Courthouse Wash Courthouse Wash

A few hundred feet north of where Hwy 191 crosses the Colorado River, turn right into a parking lot which is a staging ground for both cycling the paved bike path into Arches National Park or walking the lower Courthouse Wash. This hike will take you into Arches via its 'backdoor' — a creek valley that has left a deep cut in the Navajo sandstones that dominate this area. It is a sensory extravaganza that offers a great escape from the hustle and bustle of Moab.

Hidden Valley Hidden Valley

Just south of Moab on 191 turn right on Angel Rock road to the trailhead parking. Climb a switch backed trail to a hanging, well hidden valley — a beautiful grassy oasis bounded by red rock ramparts.

Mill Creek Canyon Mill Creek Canyon

From main street Moab take 300 South to 400 East. Turn right and then left on Mill Creek Drive. Continue for about a mile to Powerhouse Lane. Turn left and go about a mile to the trailhead parking. Follow the beaten path past the dam and along the creek trail to the confluence of Mill Creek and its North Fork. Either route from here will deliver heavenly delights of sand dunes, tranquil pools and petroglyphs.
