Island in the Sky Island in the Sky — Canyonlands National Park

Ten minutes north of Moab on Hwy 191 turn left onto Hwy 313 and prepare yourself for a 'Grand Canyon'-like experience. Relatively flat walks take you to the edge of this island in the sky with big views of the breathtaking canyon landscapes of the Colorado and Green Rivers.

45 minutes south of Moab on 191 turn right on Hwy 211 and head west for another 45 minutes before reaching a slick rock fantasy land of spires, towers, rock mushrooms, pinnacles and profound stillness.

Capitol Reef National Park Capitol Reef National Park

An hour and a half west of Moab lies one of Utah's crown jewels. Take 191 north to I-70 Go west on the interstate for 20 minutes to Hwy 24 then south to Hanksville. Continue along Hwy 24 following the Freemont River to the Park boundary. This protected area provides a smorgasbord of visual wonders ranging from the improbable bee hive domes skyscraper high in Navajo sandstone to the tapestry walls in desert varnish of the legendary Capitol Gorge.

Glen Canyon Recreation Area Glen Canyon Recreation Area

3 hours south of Moab, is the controversial reservoir named Lake Powell. It represents the flooded remains of what many considered the most sublime portion of the Colorado River — Glen Canyon. Today the big lake, a sandstone bathtub some have described as a 'terrible beauty', can be accessed by driving Hwy 191 south through Monticello and Blanding and then west on Hwy 95 and 276 to Halls Crossing.
